In 1895 Alonzo Burt founder of the Portland Billiard Ball Corporation made his pool balls in a factory near Morrill's Corner in Portland, Maine. For years a few times each week he could be seen leading a horse drawn carriage down to the waterfront to ship cases of his pool balls to distributors all around the country by either rail or ship. In the early 1900's these same pool halls had lots of gambling going on inside. The pool hall operators did not want to have money on the tables if they got busted by the police, so they asked their pool ball supplier if he could make a poker chip to use during these games instead of cash. During the 1920's Alonzo Burt respnded to his pool ball customers and took some clay, cotton flock, and binder resin that he used to compression mold his pool balls and he squeezed this mixture into a flat disk shape poker chip. For almost 70 years the BURT Company (the successor corporation to the Portland Billiard Ball Corporation) made these American style poker chips in this factory at Morrill's Corner in Portland Maine.
